The Duality of Technology in Mental Health

Updated: Aug 4, 2024

Introduction

As the prevalence of technology usage rises in school settings, what are the possibilities that it may affect teens in a way that’s not associated with the stress of homework? Teens have unlimited access to resources including social media platforms and apps, but to what extent can they properly regulate what they see?

Use of technology/social media: Pros and Cons

With the right attitude, teens have the competence to direct themselves onto the right side of social media. Whether with the encouragement of friends or even by self-supervision, anyone can reinvigorate their path to healthy amounts of online exposure. Consequently, recognizing the possible effects of being present online will expose new intentions that are overall beneficial. Remember that your course of action is equally important, and ensure you are aware of day-to-day actions. Pros As the world integrates into the use of technology, so does the spread of accessibility and availability. Such factors are beneficial and should be noted as long-term positive effects. For example, social media can directly provide support to those on their platforms by facilitating peer support and social connections. The larger the support branch, the larger the hand you have to get help when necessary. Whether it’s on a small blog forum or in a large media group chat, both have the components to provide a space for discussions regarding mental and physical health, daily challenges, or even auspicious life events. Being open in such communities can also reduce thoughts of stigmatization and increase belongingness where you can easily relate to those around you. Cons However, on the flip side, social media can alter the perceptions of young teens’ bodies as they are still growing. Recognizing harmful content may lead to body image dissatisfaction, increased stigmatization against others (online harassment and bullying), and overall negative behaviors influenced by such posts. Contrary to the openness of online platforms, inaccessibility may lead to the risk of believing that individuals don’t have a space to settle and get support. All these contributing factors impact mental health, self-esteem, and confidence. It’s important to recognize the possible outcomes of your online decisions and in order take the correct course of action, make sure to be accountable and reach out to those who care! Apps for self-care and appreciation Many available apps make taking care of your mental health into an engaging game. When you can’t contact somebody for help, reference your phone for online therapy instead! Here are some apps to consult if you are feeling unwell or unmotivated: 1. The Mighty The Mighty is a peer support app that gathers everyone with common health challenges and brings them together. Story sharing is often prevalent on this app and is targeted towards empathetic audiences.

2. Finch: Self-Care Pet This app helps those who are struggling with habits, self-love, and depression. Users can check in daily and are rewarded with items to take care of their finches. Instead of treating self-care as a chore, completed exercises are turned into fun games.

3. Calm

Calm is a meditation app that allows users to listen to meditation exercises as well as fitness programs. It promotes mental health by improving physical health aspects such as keeping a timely sleep schedule.
